Government is On-boardTarga Canada West (TCW) and the BC Provincial Government have had many productive conversations and meetings since first contact back in July 2008. Days ago, on October 7th TCW received the permission in principle to proceed with Targa events on BC roads for May 2010 and beyond, providing the Government's processes around liability insurance, community consultation, and traffic/safety management continue to be followed. This rigorous process should ensure a sustainable annual Targa event over many years. Full International Event Postponed to Debut in 2011Having now reviewed the BC Government's full requirements, TCW has decided that rushing a May 2010 debut for a full international event (five day, ~40 stage, ~500 kms, etc.) risks too many compromises. A compromised Targa debut onto the world stage is not what anyone in our team wants. Thus May 22-27, 2011 will now be the debut of the five day Targa Canada West that our team can be proud to deliver. Our sincerest apologies are offered to those of you who have made plans around a five -day 2010 event. TCW is disappointed that our full International version won't debut within months of the 2010 Vancouver-Whistler 2010 Winter Olympics. However, even that fact has not dampened our intense sense of achievement in having the Provincial Government now on-board with us. Our Rules and Regulations have been updated to reflect these date and other scoring changes. May 24 2010: Tentative One Day ‘Targa Bambina Canada West' EventWhile a five day event in 2010 is no longer planned, TCW has targeted a one-day Kelowna area Targa-style competition on May 24, 2010. The date is a Canadian federal holiday Monday, and the day after the 53rd Knox Mountain Hill Climb in Kelowna finishes. Pacific Northwesters should find this of interest, particularly those curious about Knox Mountain., www.knoxmtnhillclimb.ca. You'd have three days of motorsport competition if you string together Knox Mountain and Targa Bambina. As a one day Targa Bambina format in 2010, new competitors and volunteers would be able to experience Targa from a low threshold of time and expense required. 2010 will showcase for all observers what a great event the 5-day, ~40 stage, ~500 km International 2011 Targa Canada West will prove to be. Stay tuned to your newsletters and www.targacanadawest.com for further details as they unfold. Team "Targa Canada West" & Targa NZ: Broken Hand & HeartThe TCW Porsche 911 entry of Duane Bentley and yours truly into the Targa New Zealand Classic division was foiled in the final days by my untimely fractured hand, The blog from Targa NZ 2009 was too cool to cancel, so thanks to the Targa spirit of our many friends in that event we trust you found the Targa NZ blog on the Targa Canada West website worthwhile. Thanks also to the crew at Ground Sky photography. Congratulations to 'Super Scot' Tony Quinn, and co-driver Naomi Tillett in the VIP Pet Foods Nissan R35 GT-R for adding the 2009 Targa New Zealand Modern Champions to their extensive trophy shelf. With Quinn/ Tillett also winning the 2009 Targa Tasmania, can North American Targa challenges be in the cards for this entertaining duo? Congratulation also to Mark and Chris Kirk-Burnnand, victorious in the Classic Division in their 1987 E30 BMW M3. Volunteer AlertCompetition Director Glyn Trafford will be putting out a newsletter to those who have signed up on the TCW website at the Volunteer page. If you may want to participate in Targa by volunteering, today is a good time to ensure you are indeed signed up. Dr. Kelly Silverthorn |
